Visit of Hon’ble Chief Minister of state of Maharashtra, India

(28-29 September 2017)

1.  Hon’ble Chief Minister (CM) of Maharashtra, Mr. Devendra Fadnavis will be leading a delegation comprising Mr. Eknath Shinde, Minister for Public Works Department (PWD), and senior officials of Government of Maharashtra to Singapore from 28-29 September 2017. This is his first visit to Singapore since assuming charge of Chief Minister of Maharashtra in October 2014. (His Brief Bio-profile is enclosed.) 

2.  Hon’ble Chief Minister’s visit is to promote economic partnership between Singapore and Maharashtra, which is leading state in industry, trade, infrastructure and agriculture sector in India and hosts the main financial centre. The state accounts for 15% of India’s GDP; 25% of Indian exports; and 30% of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into India. In 2016, Maharashtra received US$29 billion in FDI which is 46 % of the total FDI received in India in 2016.

3.  During his visit to Singapore, Hon’ble Chief Minister will call on H.E. Mr. Lee Hsien Loong, Prime Minister and H.E. Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic and Social Policies of the Republic of Singapore on 29 September.

 4.  High Commission will host an Investment Roundtable for Hon’ble Chief Minister with leading companies and financial institutions based in Singapore on 28 September. Hon’ble Chief Minister will co-chair a Business Roundtable with H.E. Mr. S. Iswaran, Minister of Trade and Industry (Industry) of Singapore on 29 September. Hon’ble Chief Minister will also visit the new Terminal 4 of Singapore Changi Airport.

5.  Hon’ble Chief Minister will address a public lecture - “Infrastructure-led Growth: Maharashtra – India’s Engine of Development" organised by Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS), in support with High Commission and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) at Hotel Hilton in Singapore on Thursday, 28 September, from 10.00 am, for which all are cordially invited. (Registration and Program link- https://isas-cii-fadnavis-maharashtra-india-growth.eventbrite.sg ) 

6. During his visit, Hon’ble Chief Minister will also meet representatives of Indian community based in Singapore.

Bio- profile of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra

Mr. Devendra Fadnavis is Chief Minister of Maharashtra since October 2014. He is a rare brand of politician who is both, learned and popular with the masses.

He holds a Graduate Degree in Law from Nagpur University, a Post Graduate Degree in Business Management and a Diploma in Methods and Techniques of Project Management from D.S.E. Berlin.

Starting his political career in the mid-nineties, he became Youngest Mayor of Nagpur and second youngest Mayor in India. He is Member of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for 4 consecutive terms since 1999.

He has also been President and general Secretary of Bharatiya Janata party of Maharashtra State and National Vice President of the youth wing of the party - Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in his long career with the Party.

Mr. Devendra Fadanvis is a seasoned public representative and has been recognised in several forums for his political acumen and skill. He has served as a member on Estimate Committee, Rules Committee, Public Undertaking Committee, Standing Committee on Urban Development and Housing, Joint Select Committee on Reserve Funds, Joint Select Committee on Self Finance Schools of Maharashtra Legislature among other responsibilities. 

This ability has been recognized both nationally and internationally, as he has many awards to his credit including one from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association for the 'Best Parliamentarian Award'. He has been elected as a secretary of the Global Parliamentarian on habitat.

Mr. Devendra Fadnavis has participated in many international conventions and has made presentations on several topics including climate change and energy security. These include International Environmental Summit, U.S. National Conference of State Legislatures, Global Environmental Change Congress at Beijing, Representing India in ASEM meeting of young political leaders from Asia & Europe, member of High Level Delegation of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Global Parliamentarian Forum, and GPH Asia Regional Meet at Malaysia among others.

Mr. Devendra Fadnavis is well-known for his intellectual analysis and thought leadership on several topics including those related with fiscal issues. His analysis of the annual national budget is eagerly awaited every year His book ‘How to Understand & Read the State Budget’ acts as a reference book for many.
